Amid the flu epidemic, don’t forget RSV in young children

(Children’s Hospital Boston) An analysis of emergency department visits at Children’s Hospital Boston shows that respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) takes a substantially greater disease toll among young children than does seasonal flu. Children infected with RSV had more than twice as many ED visits and six times more hospitalizations than those with seasonal flu. Though the data are pre-H1N1, they’re a reminder not to relax public health vigilance. RSV season generally doesn’t peak until January.
